Driver CPC Periodic Training
What is periodic training?
On 10th September 2009, the EU Driver CPC Directive came into force, affecting all professional LGV drivers. Existing drivers now need to undertake 35 hours of training every 5 years to ensure that their Driver CPC is current. This is known as Periodic Training.
Periodic Training is a way for experienced drivers to prove that they are safe, courteous and fuel efficient drivers. The training helps to keep drivers up to date and aware of the latest legislation.
What subjects will the Periodic Training cover?
Periodic training is designed to complement the individual driver's work and be relevant to your every day job.
The syllabus broadly covers;
- Safe and fuel efficient driving
- Legal Requirements
- Health & Safety, Service and Logistics
There are specific courses for PCV and LGV licence holders but if a driver holds both licences only one set of periodic training needs to be completed every five years
When should drivers complete their training?
The first 35 hours of training should be completed before the 10th September 2014.
Existing drivers will lose the right to drive if training is not completed by this date.
Drivers must take blocks of training which are no less than 7 hours duration.
We recommend spreading the burden of 5 days training over the five year period by completing one 7 hour course per year.
The advantages of this are as
- Spreads the cost
- Protecting your operators licence
- More professional drivers
- Health & Safety benefits
- Increased fuel economy
- Shows commitment to drivers
What happens if you have no CPC by 2014?
It will be an offence to drive a vehicle without holding a driver CPC, or to cause or permit a person to do so. The driver will also commit an offence if they fail to produce their card at a roadside check. Enforcement will be carried out by the police and VOSA.
No CPC held when required - £1000 fine
Cause or permit the above - £1000 fine
Failure to carry card - On the spot fine
Forgery or falsifying documents - 2 yrs prison sentence or fine
Who will deliver the Periodic Training?
Only approved courses taken with approved training centres will count towards periodic training. The approval process for courses is managed on behalf of the Driving Standards Agency by the Joint Approvals Unit for Periodic Training (JAUPT).
The DSA will provide a central database to keep records of the periodic training completed by each driver. It will be the responsibility of the training centre to enter records onto the database (drivers will be able to access their own records via the internet).
There is no Pass/Fail element to the training.
On completion of the initial training or the 35 hours of periodic training a driver will automatically be issued with a DQC, Driver Qualification Card, to prove that they hold the Driver CPC.
We are also ITSSAR accredited and can offer solutions for your material handling equipment training
that can also count towards the driver CPC hours.
All our instructors are fully qualified and have many years’ experience in their industry, helping you to achieve your desired goal.
